The first XK 120 caused a sensation when it was first shown in 1948, but it was largely built to publicize the engine intended for a
saloon that was then two years off. The engine, the legendary XK unit, was the first mass-production twin-cam engine, and it developed its target power of 160 bhp.
The straight line speed of
120 mph implied in the designation was soon proved, and there were successes in events as varied as the Alpine Rally and Tourist Trophy. As an all-round sports car, it set new standards. Some 7.500
